Privacy Policy

Captiono ("we," "us," or "our") is a browser-based tool for generating and styling video captions. This policy explains what happens to your data — including your media files — when you use it. The short version: your video file is never uploaded anywhere. Only the audio track is extracted and sent securely to generate your captions, and it is not retained afterward.

What We Collect

We do not collect, receive, or have any access to the video files you work with in Captiono. There is no upload step for video — your file is read directly by your browser and is never transmitted to us or to any server we operate.

To generate captions, the audio track is extracted from your file in your browser and sent, over an encrypted connection, to the transcription service we use to produce your transcript and word-level timestamps. That audio is used only to generate your transcript and is not used to train models or shared for any other purpose. We do not send your video frames, only audio.

Captiono does not require an account, a sign-up, an email address, or any personal information to use, and we never sell data of any kind. We do use Google Analytics on the marketing pages of this site (not inside the editor while you're working with media) to understand things like which pages are visited and how people navigate the site — see "Cookies & Local Storage" below for what that involves.

How Processing Works

When you upload a video or audio file into Captiono, it's loaded directly into your browser's memory. Caption styling, positioning, and rendering the final captioned video all happen locally, using your device's own processing power — your video file is never sent to a server at any point, including ours.

Generating the transcript is the one step that isn't fully local: the extracted audio is sent securely to our transcription provider, processed, and the resulting text and timestamps are sent back to your browser. This typically takes well under a minute for short clips.

Cookies & Local Storage

We use your browser's local storage to remember basic preferences on your device, such as your chosen light or dark theme, so the app feels consistent when you return. This information stays on your device and is not sent to us.

On the marketing pages of this site (not inside the editor itself — see below), we use Google Analytics, which sets cookies and collects standard usage data: pages visited, how you got here, and on-page interactions like scrolling and clicking outbound links. This data is pseudonymous — tied to a browser-generated ID, not your name or email — and is processed by Google under its own privacy policy.

Analytics only runs if you accept it. The first time you visit, a banner asks you to Accept or Decline — nothing is set until you choose, and declining (or just closing the tab without choosing) means no analytics cookies are ever placed. You can change your mind at any time using "Cookie preferences" in the footer, or opt out globally with the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on.

Analytics is never loaded on the caption generator page itself, regardless of your cookie choice — the page where you actually upload and work with your media is never tracked.

Third-Party Requests

When you generate captions, the extracted audio from your file is sent to a third-party transcription service to produce your transcript. This is the only point in the product where any part of your media leaves your device, and it's limited strictly to audio — never video frames, never the file itself.

The rest of the app — fonts and the rendering engine used to burn captions into your video — is downloaded once from a content delivery network and cached in your browser for offline use afterward. Those downloads contain software only, never your media.

Separately, the marketing pages of this site use Google Analytics as described above — that's a request to Google's servers, not related to your media in any way, and it never runs on the editor page itself.

Your Rights

We don't collect or hold your media or personal data ourselves — your files and your caption projects live entirely on your own device, under your control, so there's generally nothing for us to access, export, or delete on your behalf. The one exception is the pseudonymous Google Analytics data described above, which you can view, control, or request deletion of directly through Google's own account tools. If you have questions about how any part of this works, contact us using the details below and we'll look into it.

Changes to This Policy

If we change how Captiono works in a way that affects this policy, we'll update this page and revise the "Last updated" date above. We encourage you to review this page occasionally if you have concerns about privacy.
